The costume he chose for himself - the pageboy blond hair and the black tights - make him look effete. It's almost as if Zeffirelli doesn't trust the material and is insisting on giving it the modern spin of a modern made-for-TV movie about a dysfunctional family to make it somehow "relevant."īut of course the fundamental difference between the two films has to do with performance of the title role. The famous kiss is the real thing, lips, tongues, embrace, the works. Moreover, the cinematography and the costuming (or rather lack of it, as it attends to Close's torso) insist on portraying her as a sexual object and bring to the famous bedroom scene tensions that Shakespeare could not have imagined. In the range of sexual attractiveness, she's far better matched with her son Gibson is, after all, considered the most devastating physical presence in the world. But she's clearly of the same generation as her son, so much so that her new allegiance to her dead husband's brother seems somehow inappropriate, almost indecent. Zeffirelli, of course, chose Glenn Close for Gertrude (she's brilliant also). When they are alone in her bedroom after the murder of Polonius, the drama is shrill but never unsettling. As played (brilliantly) by Eileen Herlie, she's a mature but not asexual woman who is definitely a generation apart from her son. However secretly incestuous and Oedipal Hamlet's yearnings may be, in Olivier's "Hamlet" mama is definitely mama. ![]() There are strange deviations in interpretations, too. ![]()
